Unicorn caterpillar on a rose bush.

Good afternoon,

I found caterpillars over the weekend on my rose bushes. Is this one that I should be spraying? I hate to kill them if they are good ones. Thank you, as always, for your time and help.

This is a unicorn caterpillar, Schizura unicornis. We find them feeding on roses sometimes. They grow up to be a moth.

I’m not sure what you mean by “good ones.” If the damage to the roses is not too bad, you may just let them feed and move on. If you think the damage they are causing is bad enough to be unacceptable, you can hand pick and destroy the ones you see, or spray with any insecticide labeled to control caterpillars on ornamentals.
