Annual Report, 2000

The 2000 meeting of SERA-IEG-27 was held on July 26 and 27, 2000, in Ocoee, Florida. Official representatives present: Donna Fare (USDA, McMinnville, Tennessee), Michael Arnold (Texas), Richard Beeson (Florida), Edward Bush (Louisiana), Winston Dunwell (Kentucky), Patricia Knight (Mississippi), John Ruter (Georgia), Ken Tilt (Alabama), William Klingamen (Tennessee), Gary Knox (Florida), Jon Lindstrom (Arkansas), Alan Owings (Louisiana), and Dewayne Ingram (SERA-IEG-27 Administrator). Others present: Tom Yeager (Florida) and graduate students Richard Olsen (Georgia) and Jayne File (Mississippi). Richard Beeson provided a tour of the new research station in Ocoee, Florida, and arranged for a tour of the Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, Florida. Winston Dunwell led the group in a review and discussion of a manuscript in submission to HortTechnology on the groups' history and activities. On-line plant data collection materials were discussed for the group homepage. Data collection forms were revised. Sponsors agreed to provide a distributor list with future distributions for inclusion on the website. A uniform coding system for plant trial entries was agreed upon. It was agreed that plant sponsors for testing would be responsible for annual reports on their plants, provision of images for the web page, and writing a summary article for the Proceedings of the Southern Nursery Research Conference at the conclusion of the evaluation period for each taxon. It was agreed to place minutes of the meetings on the website. Aimee Coker, from Flowerwood Nursery in Bushnell, Florida, provided an overview of their Encore Plants program. Officers elected for 2000-2001 were Michael Arnold-Chair, Gary Knox-Secretary, and William Klingamen-Executive Committee Member. Texas A&M University will host the 2001 meeting in College Station, Texas, on June 14 – 15, 2001. Michael Arnold will be the site coordinator. The 2002 meeting is tentatively slated for Tennessee.
