Louisiana 4-H is proud to announce that seven of its members returned from Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), 4-H’s premier summer national conference at the 4-H National Youth Conference Center in our nation’s capital just a few weeks ago. Louisiana’s delegation included Breoin Brumfield and Laura Theall, both of St. Charles Parish; Trake Grider, Keyana McCoy and Johnathan Lindsey of Claiborne Parish; Sarah McCoy from Bienville Parish; and Sherry Marie Higgins from St. Mary Parish.
Nearly 2,000 young people from over 35 states traveled to the Center to experience the living classroom of Washington, D.C. While participating in CWF, these 4-H'ers improved their understanding of the importance of civic and social responsibilities in order to become better citizens and leaders and strengthened their communication skills, exchanged ideas, practiced respect and formed friendships with other youth from across the country! In addition to classroom workshops, the delegates visited with Louisiana’s congressmen on Capitol Hill and toured Mount Vernon, Arlington Cemetery, the Lincoln and War memorials, and the Vietnam Wall.
At the end of each week, 4-H’ers reflected on what they learned throughout their week in Washington and how the week had changed them. You can see how their time at Citizenship Washington Focus impacted them personally through their comments below:
“I have always wanted a career in politics and now I feel this experience has confirmed my career choice.”
"My favorite tour was of the Vietnam Wall, I've learned so much more about our history. And I appreciate what men and women have done for this country and for me. I left something special for someone I know at the wall. It was a special moment for me.
"I'm a better leader after this amazing experience. I will take so much home to my club and county. I made many friendships that I will keep for a long time! Thanks!"
"This trip has definitely been a once in a lifetime opportunity. With the help of [CWF]my eyes have been opened not only to our nation's rich history, but I have been inspired to take this country by the horns! I have learned that I can do whatever my heart desires."
