LSU AgCenter hosts workshop on athletic field maintenance March 20 at ULM

Learn the basics of athletic field maintenance at an LSU AgCenter workshop to be held at the University of Louisiana-Monroe Malone Stadium on March 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Dr. Buck Bounds, a Master Gardener and retired professor at ULM, will give the introduction.

Topics to be covered include bermudagrass growth, identification and establishment by Dr. Jeff Beasley, assistant professor in the LSU AgCenter’s School of Plant, Environmental & Soil Sciences; soil testing, fertilization and pH by Dr. Tom Koske, extension horticulturist; aerification, mowing and top dressing, Beasley; irrigation basics, Dr. Ron Sheffield, assistant professor in the LSU AgCenter’s Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering; overseeding bermudagrass fields, Koske and Dr. Ron Strahan, extension weed scientist; liquid and granular calibration, Strahan, Koske, Beasley and Danny Taverner, LSU AgCenter research associate; weed identification and control, Strahan; and managing fire ants and mole crickets, Rafash Brew, Union Parish extension agent. The cost is $25 and includes lunch.
