4-H Forestry Team Takes 6th Place At National Meet

A team of four 4-H’ers from Louisiana took sixth place at the 27th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational held recently (July 23-27) in West Virginia.

Louisiana was among the 15 states that participated.

Representing Louisiana were Josh Ritter of Many, Brooke Barrios of Converse, Clint Manuel of Ville Platte and Victoria Leblanc of Abbeville. The team was coached by Steven Hotard, LSU AgCenter forestry agent in Rapides Parish, and Teresa Price, LSU AgCenter 4-H agent in Claiborne Parish.

The event was held at the West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, W.Va. The International Paper Co. Foundation and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the invitational.

The 4-H members competed for overall team and individual awards in several categories, including a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the Forestry Bowl and forest evaluation.
