Coastal Engineer Joins LSU AgCenter Faculty

News Release Distributed 05/16/07

Dr. Hassan Mashriqui has joined the LSU AgCenter as an assistant professor with primary responsibilities in coastal engineering. His appointment is jointly funded with the Louisiana Sea Grant Program.

“Dr. Mashriqui brings with him a wealth of information and capabilities in coastal modeling and hurricane surge flow,” said Dr. Dan Thomas, head of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering.

Mashriqui will develop a comprehensive extension program to support community needs related to hurricanes, storm surge and floods, and building or rebuilding levees. He also will provide leadership and support for training programs for those interested in serving on levee boards.

“With the tremendous need for expertise in coastal processes and restoration, the addition of Dr. Mashriqui will help the AgCenter bring information to parishes, boards, levee districts and commissions to help protect their communities,” said Dr. Paul Coreil, vice chancellor and director of extension. “Dr. Mashriqui will be a conduit for research-based information.”

Mashriqui is a licensed professional engineer in civil engineering. He most recently was involved in developing coastal hydrologic and hydraulic modeling capabilities for the LSU Hurricane Center. His research interests include coastal and inland flooding from hurricanes, hydrodynamic and sediment transport modeling, wetland restoration, river management, and using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology-based environmental modeling.
