News Release Distributed 04/18/08
The LSU AgCenter’s Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station near Clinton will hold a white-tailed deer field day on Saturday, April 26.
Dr. Don Reed, LSU AgCenter forestry specialist at the station, said the event will focus on the management of the white-tailed deer population and their habitat.
“We will be looking at food plot preparation techniques along with an evaluation of various clover and oat planting trials here at the station,” Reed said. “Safety considerations when hunting from elevated tree stands also will be a topic of discussion.”
In addition to these topics, there will be an update on the South Louisiana White-tailed Deer Radio Telemetry Study as well as a presentation on breeding dates and herd health issues in white-tailed deer.
The program will begin at 8 a.m. with a welcome and introductions by Dr. Dearl Sanders, resident coordinator at the station, followed by opening comments from Robert Barham, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
The field day is cosponsored by the LSU AgCenter’s Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station, Quality Deer Management Association, South Louisiana Branch and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Registration on the day of the program will be $40. Checks should be made payable to QMDA.
Further information about the field day is available from Reed at (225) 683-5848.
