Forage field day set for May 8 in St. Helena Parish

News Release Distributed 04/28/08

The LSU AgCenter’s Southeast Research Station and the Louisiana Forage and Grassland Council will sponsor a forage field day May 8.

The field day will begin at 10 a.m. at the Darrel Hoover beef farm near Montpelier and continue at the LSU AgCenter’s Southeast Research Station near Franklinton.

The program will feature legume interseeding in perennial pastures, hay/bale silage production and forage equipment demonstrations, said Dr. Mike McCormick, LSU AgCenter resident coordinator at the Southeast Research Station.

“A full program of events has been included, and we feel that valuable information will be presented for livestock and hay producers throughout the region,” McCormick said.

In addition to information on forage crops, forage equipment demonstrations will include no-till planters, mower conditioners, silage balers, hay accumulators, small square bales, individual round-bale wrappers, in-line round-bale wrappers, hay injector system and electric fencing.

McCormick said a barbecue lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. at the research station, where the program will continue until 4 p.m.

The Darrell Hoover Farm is located seven miles west of Amite off Louisiana Highway 16. From highway 16 in Montpelier, take highway 441 south for one block, then go west on highway 1036 for about three miles. The farm is located on the left.

Additional information is available from McCormick at (985) 839-2322 or Dr. Ronnie Bardwell at (985) 789-4297.
