News Release Distributed 03/15/07

LAFAYETTE – A deer management and food plot workshop for hunters will be held March 28 north of Lafayette.

Sponsored by the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the event starts at 4 p.m. March 28. It will be conducted at 400 Dugas Road in a garden maintained by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office that is adjacent to the Lafayette Consolidated Government compost facility.

A deer food plot demonstration with 13 types of forage will be on display. Discussions will include browsing plants preferred by deer, buck harvest strategies to improve antler quality, what a deer necropsy can reveal about herd health issues and breeding date determination.

Speakers from the LSU AgCenter will include associate wildlife professor Dr. Don Reed, area fisheries agent Mark Shirley and county agents Stan Dutile and Stuart Gauthier.

Scheduled speakers from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries include Tony Vidrine, Emile LeBlanc, Scott Durham and James Ernst.

The cost for participating in the workshop and a meal served during the event is $10 if registration is completed before March 23 or $15 after that time.
