CALHOUN – The LSU AgCenter will host the 2005 Goat Extravaganza June 25 at the AgCenter’s Calhoun Research Station.
The program, which is being conducted in conjunction with Mid-South Goat Masters, begins with registration at 8 a.m. There is no registration fee, but participants are asked to complete registration by 9 a.m.
Topics for the day include marketing goats and forage selection and management. Producers also will talk about their experiences during a panel discussion, and activities will include hands-on demonstrations of goat management.
Terry Hankins, editor of Goat Rancher Magazine, will give a "Journalistic Overview of Past, Present and Future Trends of the U.S. Meat Goat Industry." Hankins, who is from Sarah, Miss., also is a goat breeder.
A sale featuring selected breeding and market animals for 4-H and FFA projects will follow lunch. The winners of a goat judging contest for youth, which will be held during the morning, also will be announced after lunch.

According to the Louisiana Summary of Agriculture and Natural Resources, produced by the LSU AgCenter, the goat industry contributed nearly $1.8 million to the state’s economy is 2005.
