2008 4-H District Commodity Cookery Winners

Youth Take Top Honors at District 4-H Contest
Recently Jeff Davis 4-H'ers competed at the District Commodity Cookery Contest held in Crowley. Four-Hers's from thirteen parishes throughout southwest Louisiana participated in the contests and educational programs. Youth were taught lessons and played interactive games relating to fitness, nutrition, and portion control.
Taking top honors for the District were: Christian Bergeaux of Hathaway, 1st place in Oyster - Seafood Cookery; Sarah Ardoin of Jennings, 1st place in Fish & Other - Seafood Cookery; Cade Myers of Welsh, 1st place in Rice Cookery - Main Dish; Amber Estes of Elton, 1st place in Sugar Cookery - Baked items; and Nicholas Thibodeaux of Jennings, 1st place in Sugar Cookery - Other Desserts.
Other youth placing in contests included: Gabrielle Gobert of Elton, 2nd place in Rice Cookery Desserts and 2nd place in Low-Calorie Beef; Christi LaVergne of Elton, 3rd place in Seafood Cookery - Shrimp. Blue ribbon winners included Katherine Wall of Bethel in Seafood - Crab; Harley Domingue of Jennings in Seafood Cookery- Crawfish, Loryn Jensen of Hathaway in Beef- One Dish Meal; Dillon Richard of Welsh in Rice Cookery - Side Dish; and Harley Domingue of Jennings in Beef-Quick and Easy.
It is important to teach youth life skills and through 4-H Youth Development, many young people are learning about preventing childhood obesity and building healthier food relationships. The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, a division of the LSU AgCenter, has targeted the teaching of fitness and nutrition through local, district, and state commodity cookery contests.
