Flaging tree locations.
Dr. R. S. Sanderlin, LSU AgCenter plant pathologist, and Richard Shelton, former LSU AgCenter entomology research associate, mark tree locations at the proper spacings with orange flags while Addie Gibson, former LSU AgCenter horticulture research associate, holds the measuring tape.

Digging holes with an auger.
Dr. R. S. Sanderlin, LSU AgCenter plant pathologist, and John Walek, former LSU AgCenter maintenance repair master/farm supervisor, guide a 9-inch auger into the ground to create an 18-inch deep hole in which to plant the trees.


Marking off tree rows.
Richard Shelton, former LSU AgCenter entomology research associate, and Dr. Charles Graham, LSU AgCenter horticulturist, mark rows with wooden stakes at the proper spacings while Dr. R. S. Sanderlin, LSU AgCenter plant pathologist, holds the measuring tape.

Dr. Charles Graham, LSU AgCenter horticulturist, checks for healthy roots and trims broken and damaged roots back to healthy tissue. Trees with galls on the roots are discarded.
