Precision vertical plate seeders are available for planting many vegetable crops (Figure 1). These seeders use a vertical metal plate with the cells (holes) on the edge (Figure 2). These seeders are heavy duty and designed for precision planting of vegetable seeds. They have not been tested by the LSU AgCenter, so comparisons with belt and vacuum seeders are not available.
The cells will have to be sized fairly closely to the seed size. As with a belt seeder, it is expected that spherical seeds will meter more uniformly than oddly shaped seeds. These seeders are available from Starco.
