CENTRAL RESEARCH STATION PROGRAM

NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: Animal and plant science research conducted by various departmental faculty and staff affiliated with the LSU AgCenter, and other collaborating agencies, requires an accessible research station as a base of operation which provides land, equipment, personnel, and other services in support of those research activities. Central Research Station occupies approximately 2300 contiguous acres within three miles of the LSU main campus, making it an ideal location to support the ongoing activities of researchers, teachers, extension personnel, and graduate students. The greenhouse ranges on campus are also part of the Central Research Station structure and they provide space and services for faculty and staff requiring such needs to support their research programs. The Veterinary Science Farm occupies an additional 500 acres and includes the Brightside area and other land and facilites located at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Certain Central Research Station personnel have the responsibility as unit managers to work directly with faculty and students in support of their research programs. These managers assist in the collection of data, assign space, provide land preparation, pasture maintenance, agronomic support, and animal husbandry as needed by

departmental faculty and graduate students.

OBJECTIVES: To provide facilities, equipment, land, and personnel to research scientists from the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station (LAES), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) for the purpose of conducting both applied and basic research in the broad areas of plant and animal science deemed vital to the agricultural and scientific communities. There is a unique three-way relationship with LAES, the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES), and the teaching function of LSU campus faculty. A second objective is to provide an environment to enhance opportunities for students, teachers, and cooperative extension programs and personnel to interact with ongoing research programs.

APPROACH: Central Research Station personnel are assigned to existing facilities which include office space, storage area, maintenance shops, equipment sheds, land area, and animal containment facilities. A headquarters building houses administration, storage for faculty, equipment storage, and the primary maintenance shop. Allocation of resources is determined based on need and priority and will result from cooperation among the Resident Director, the unit supervisors, and project leaders representing various research disciplines. No less than quarterly staff meetings will be held to plan research activities, allocate resources, coordinate activities among research scientists and unit supervisors, manage budgets, and implement improvements to Central Research Station in order to efficiently and effectively provide services to LAES personnel and other cooperating agencies.
