Extension

Technology transfer, extension education and outreach with research-based information are important components of the LSU AgCenter’s and Louisiana Sea Grant’s aquaculture programs.

With the estimated value of aquaculture exceeding $218 million in 2005, technical assistance and transfer of timely, research-based recommendations are essential for the success of Louisiana’s aquaculture industries. Additionally, numerous private landowners seek objective management guidelines for the estimated 90,000 recreational ponds.

In conjunction with the Sea Grant Extension Project, AgCenter faculty work with stakeholders ranging from potential producers considering aquaculture ventures to government officials and policy makers.

Information provided to the public includes educational materials such as fact sheets and bulletins, as well as newsletters, videos and Web pages.

Extension aquaculture activities include educational meetings, pond demonstrations, field days, problem-solving site visits and in-service training for county agents and other extension faculty.

Important topics in aquaculture extension programming include:

  • Development and Application of Best Management Practices (BMPs)
  • Aquaculture Effluent Guidelines
  • Marketing and Value-added Strategies
  • Enhancing Competitiveness in the Face of Competing Imported Products
  • Leadership Development
  • Environmental Compatibility of Aquaculture Practices
