West Feliciana 4-Hers Compete in 2007 Horse Shows

Three West Feliciana youth participated in the S.E. District level LSU AgCenter
4-H/FFA Horse Show, held in Baton Rouge, 26-29 June, and two went on to compete at State in West Monroe, 10-13 July.

According to Ken Spoto, County Agent working with 4-H Youth and Adult Volunteers, at District, Sarah Brian exhibited the Grand Champion Appaloosa Halter Mare, “Jacks Destin.” Brian also placed 1st in Reining, 3d in Western Riding, 4th in Western Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, and Western Showmanship, and 5th in Trail, all 13 years & under-level performance classes. She also exhibited a Quarter Horse Gelding, named “Tommy” that placed 11th in his class. At State, Brian exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Appaloosa Halter Mare and placed 1st in Western Pleasure; 5th place in Showmanship, Reining and Trail; and 10th place in Horsemanship.

Kelly Hughes and her three horses, “Duke” “Chaoui” and “I’m A Promotion Dude”, were contenders in many of the contests at District where she was recognized as High Point Performance Winner in the 13 year and under age group. In the speed events, Hughes placed 4th in Stakes, 5th in Breakaway Roping, 6th in Poles, and Red Ribbon group in Barrels. In the Western events, Hughes placed 2d in Trail, Western Riding, Reining, and Western Showmanship, 8th in Western Horsemanship and in the Blue Ribbon Class in Western Pleasure. In the Halter Contests, Hughes exhibited a quarter horse gelding that placed 8th in its class. In the English Contests, Hughes placed 2d in Hunt Seat Equitation and 3d in Hunter Under Saddle. In the Premier Exhibitor Contest, she placed 4th. At State, Hughes was Reserve High Point Champion and her placings included 1st in English Equitation, 3d in Showmanship; 5th in Hunter Under Saddle; 6th in Reining, 8th in Horsemanship; and 10th in Western Pleasure.

Jessica Loyd, a third exhibitor from West Feliciana exhibited at District in the 14 year old and older divisions of Poles, Barrels, and Stake, placing in the Red Ribbon Group for each event. Loyd did not compete at State.

With their first place awards in Western Pleasure and English Equitation, respectively, Brian and Hughes qualified to compete at the Southern Regional Horse Show in Memphis, Tennessee in August.
