West Carroll Parish is in the northeast section of Louisiana, joining Arkansas on the north, East Carroll Parish on the east, Richland Parish on the south and Morehouse Parish on the West. Bayou Macon divides East and West Carroll parishes. Beouf River is the boundary between West Carroll and Morehouse parishes. The Mississippi River is 15 miles to the east.
Two major highways cross the parish: Highway 17, a north/south road connecting Arkansas and I-20 to the south, and Highway 2, an east/west highway connecting Highway 65 in East Carroll Parish and Highway 165 in Morehouse Parish.
The parish has a land area of 359.4 square miles or 230,033 acres. About 95% of the acreage is agricultural land,crop land and pasture. The Macon Ridge terrace that runs north and south through the center of the parish is a loess soil, making up about 75% of the parish soil type. The soil type on the east and west edges of the parish is alluvial plains.
The major towns are Oak Grove (parish seat), Kilbourne, Epps, Pioneer and Forest. West Carroll is home to Poverty Point State Commemorative Area, which features prehistoric Indian mounds that date between 700 and 1800 B.C. The site includes a lookout tower, a museum with audio-visual presentations and artifacts found on the site, guided tours to the mounds and any on-going archeological digs.
The parish has four (K-12) high schools and one elementary schools (K-6). The parish tax base supports the schools, roads and drainage plus a garbage/recycling program, 911, ambulance service and fire protection districts. Oak Grove has one hospital and two nursing homes.
Major manufacturing includes Ruffin Building Systems, Inc., a prefabrication metal building industry. West Carroll has a weekly newspaper, The West Carroll Gazette, and radio station KWCL 96.7FM.
