West Carroll is primarily an agricultural row crop area. Major row crops of economic value are sweet potatoes, cotton, rice, soybeans and feed grains. Animal enterprises make up about 10% of the farm gate value of all agricultural enterprises. Total farm gate value of agriculture is $40 million to $50 million annually, depending upon commodity prices, yield and acreage.
There is one cotton gin operating in West Carroll and a cotton warehouse in Oak Grove. A large grain elevator is in operation at Pioneer, a small village. There are 22 sweet potato storage and packing sheds operated by growers or sweet potato brokers. West Carroll is also noted for its production of good quality tomatoes and other produce sold at roadside stands and farmers' markets as well as grocery outlets.
Timber acreage has increased to between 35,000 and 40,000 acres of pine and hardwood as a result of the Conservation Reserve Program. Wildlife populations are also on the increase. Enterprises related to hunting and other outdoor opportunities are being considered to add value to this acreage. Timber and related enterprises will gain significance in the future.
