Welcome to West Baton Rouge Parish

Map_of_Louisiana_highlighting_West_Baton_Rouge_Parish

West Baton Rouge Parish is primarily a rural parish with four small towns and a population of 21,717.  We have the distinction of being the smallest parish in the state and are in south central Louisiana on the west bank of the Mississippi River, just across from the capital city of Baton Rouge.

There has been substantial development in the petrol-chemical industry, and four major plants line the Mississippi River.  The total land area in the parish is 135,680 acres. There are some 40 farmers growing agronomic crops on 23,418 acres. Ranking the crops by acreage:

  1. Sugarcane - 15,435 acres
  2. Soybean - 5,625 acres
  3. Wheat - 1,782 acres
  4. Corn - 431 acres
  5. Sorghum - 145 acres

West Baton Rouge also has 75 cattlemen with 2,900 head of mature cows, along with 1,250 acres in crawfish. We are starting to lose some of our agricultural land for residential and commercial development.
