'Down Home Celebration' - the 95th Year of the Free Fair

catalog.3
"Down Home Celebration" 2008 Fair Catalog Cover

The 95th Washington Parish Free Fair is here!

Just in case you may take it for granted, the fair does not just happen by itself. It takes a tremendous amount of time, work, effort and other activities by VOLUNTEERS to make the fair the great event that it is. So, while you get ready to join the many activities, remember all the volunteers that make this event possible.

While you are at the fair, and this is especially true for parents of young children, remember that yellow jackets are on the prowl. They will be with us until first frost. Their food sources are dwindling and they do not mind looking for any food source available. If you buy a canned drink, do not drink without checking for yellow jackets. It could save you a trip to the hospital.

AGRICULTURE CROPS BUILDING

Home vegetable gardeners, vegetable producers and others are asked to bring a display to exhibit at the fair. We've had some awfully dry weather, and it may be difficult to get the exhibit you want to show, but whatever you have, bring it to display. Officials will be taking entries on Monday, Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. until noon.

On Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) of the fair at the Agriculture Crops Building, VEGETABLE AND FLOWER SEEDS will be given out. These seeds are many of the varieties recommend for planting. Also, if everything goes as planned, LSU AgCenter agent Henry Harrison will be giving away -- through a drawing -- Encore azaleas and other azalea varieties. So, if you are at the fair, visit the Agriculture Crops Building and get some seeds to plant a garden.

Make sure you enjoy the fair by having a safe, family-oriented, fun-filled week of activities!
