Dollar Defense Workshop Held

Dollar Defense Presenters

This year’s Dollar Defense Workshop featuring the LSU AgCenter, SHIPP, Governor’s Office Elderly Affairs (GOEA), Louisiana State Attorney General’s Office, and Medicaid/LaCHIP was held at the Franklinton Senior Center on September 9, 2009.

The goals of the Dollar Defense workshops were to promote education and awareness of scams that the elderly may encounter. This year Valerie Vincent of the LSU AgCenter spoke on ways to recognize and avoid predatory lending. Then Barbara Gooden of SHIPP spoke on how to avoid insurance fraud. Mary Corbin of Volunteers of America next presented information on the Medicaid/LaCHIP programs.

Afterward, Lisha Landry of the Attorney General’s Office told the residents about Louisiana state telemarketing scams and how to avoid becoming a victim. Washington Parish Sherriff Robert J. Crowe reinforced the idea that these scams are local and do exists in our area. Sherriff Crowe informed the crowd that if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

Lastly, Michelle Guillory of the Governor’s Office Elderly Affairs spoke on ways to avoid home repair rip-offs. With the recent issues of fraud in the news in Washington Parish, this information will hopefully help create awareness and prevention. Anyone can be vulnerable to fraud or identity theft and explaining to residents that the costs of identity theft or scams of any kind can be devastating to consumers. Therefore, consumers need to be scam-smart and to learn how to recognize predatory activities and avoid becoming a victim.
