The West Louisiana Forestry Festival Livestock, Rabbit and Poultry Shows were held the Friday and Saturday of the fair. The shows involved youth from across the parish as they exhibited livestock animals they raised.

The annual West Louisiana Forestry Festival Pet Show was held October 9, 2009, and was filled with pets of all kinds ranging from pure-bred and mixed-breed dogs to cats and rabbits to goats with youngsters showing their pets ranging from the age of 2 to 18.

The Chinese tallow tree arrived in the United States in the 1700s in South Carolina.

Late last summer, a forest landowner called me to look at a bark beetle infestation. The good news was that the “bug” spot was inactive and was not spreading. It has some dead trees and dark green trees close by. If it had been a “hot” bug spot, there would have been dead brown trees, then yellow trees, then light green trees and then dark green trees. The gradual change in needle colors would indicate that the bark beetles were spreading.

The 2009 State Fair of Louisiana is set to be held October 20-November 8, 2009. The State Fair will take place in Shreveport, LA.

More than 500 youth from across Vernon Parish recently participated in the annual 4-H Judging Day event held at the fairgrounds in Leesville on Nov. 20, 2008.

4-H Petroleum Power Day was held November 25, 2008, at the Rodeo Arena in Leesville.

Vernon Parish Elementary Demonstration Day will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2009. The Jr. & Sr. Demonstration Day will be held Thursday, February 26, 2009. Demonstration Days will be held at the Lions Children Camp. Rules and Regulations are enclosed.

Classes for child care providers and child care centers are posted quarterly. For Class A and in-home caregivers, the price is $7.50; for Class B providers, the price is $42.50. (The orientation class is mandatory for in-home caregivers. The price is $10 for this 4-hour class.)
