Soil / Water Testing

SOIL TESTING:

The LSU AgCenter tests soil for farmers and home gardeners. These samples are tested and evaluated for nutrients and minerals in the soil, along with the soil pH, and the results are customized for whatever crop or plant is to be grown. If, for example, the grower wants to plant roses, the soil is analyzed as stated above and the necessary adjustments the grower needs to make to the soil, based on the analysis, are suggested. To have your soil tested, follow these steps.

  • For an average garden of about 1/8 of an acre, take five to six samples at a depth ranging from the top of the surface to 6 inches. Mix the samples in a bucket or other container and pour the contents into a small container or plastic bag. Be sure the total volume of the soil is a least one pint.
  • Bring the sample to the Vernon Parish office at 201 South 3rd Street in the old courthouse in Leesville, along with a check or money order for $7.00 made out to Agronomy STPAL. Cash cannot be accepted.
  • Soil samples are then mailed to Baton Rouge for analysis. After about two weeks, the results will be mailed to you.
  • Once you get the results, if you have any questions, contact Cleve Weisgerber for further information at (337)239-3231.

WATER TESTING:

Routine or pond water analyses are distributed seven to 10 working days from laboratory receipt of sample. Tests include:  pH, Conductivity, Salts, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn, S, Cl, Nitrates, Alkalinity, Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) and Hardness.

Instructions for taking sample:

  1. Well Sample - run water through the lines for at least five minutes before taking a sample. Use a clean bottle for the sample.
  2. Pond, River or Stream Sample - for best results, do not take the sample near the edge. Make sure the sample is free from floating trash such as leaves, weeds, wood, etc.
  3. Bring the sample to the Vernon Parish office at 201 South 3rd Street in the old courthouse in Leesville, along with a check or money order for $7.00 made out to Agronomy STPAL.  Cash cannot be accepted.
