Terrebonne Parish 4-H Membership and Participation Policies
The 4-H club is the largest youth organization in the United States and is conducted through the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, the educational branch of the LSU Agricultural Center. Extension 4-H Youth Development agents coordinate the 4-H educational program in the schools.
Schools with organized 4-H club programs offer enrollment in 4-H during the month of September. 4-H club members attend and participate in organized club meetings, select at least one project to study, complete the activities in the project book, participate in educational contests and workshops, win awards, and learn many new and interesting things.
Membership policies are established by parish, state, and national advisory committees. The following policies are membership and participation guidelines for enrollment in the Terrebonne Parish 4-H Youth Development Program.

4-H club membership is open to all active students enrolled in the 4th through 12th grades or ages 9 to 19 regardless of race, color, sex, handicap, religion, or national origin.

To be a bona fide 4-H member, a boy or girl must be at least 9 years of age before January 1, 2009 and must not have passed his/her 20th birthday on January 1, 2009. This means that an eligible member must be between 9 and 19 years of age on December 31, 2008. In no case will a boy or girl be eligible to enroll in 4-H after they have graduated from high school.

Membership in local 4-H clubs must be taken by the parish deadline of October 15, 2008. All enrollment forms are due to the 4-H office that day. In no case, will late enrollment forms be allowed or accepted.

To participate in the parish 4-H livestock program, a child must be a bona fide 4-H member, between the ages of 9 and 19 years on December 31, 2008.

Any youth interested in enrolling in a 4-H livestock project (beef, swine, sheep, goats) must enroll by September 15, 2008. Enrollment by this date will allow members to participate in all levels of livestock show activities and to participate in the parish 4-H livestock sale.

In order to sell a livestock animal at the parish sale, the 4-H member must attend monthly school club meetings and participate in parish and district show activities. 4-H member must posses a valid health certificate from an accredited veterinarian when animals arrive on the show grounds. He/she must participate in district show activities if he/she qualifies at the parish level. Failure to participate in district show activities upon qualifying will result in assessment of a fine of $250.00 per animal not shown or exhibitor will be prohibited from participation in the 4-H livestock program for 1 year.

4-H members who enroll in a 4-H livestock project after September 15, 2008 will not be eligible to sale his/her animals at the parish 4-H livestock sale and will not be able to participate in the district and state 4-H livestock shows. All animals (market and commercial) sheep, goats and cattle must be in the 4-H members possession and validated by the following date SEPTEMBER 27, 2008. It is the 4-H member’s responsibility to transport his animal to one of the following areas on the following dates to have the animal validated in order to be able to show it at the parish, district and state 4-H Livestock Shows!!!
Steers, Beef Commercial Heifers, Market lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats, and Commercial Does will be validated and classified at regional locations on September 23-27, 2008. Exhibitors may attend any of the listed sites to be validated. The possession date for the listed groups will be September 27, 2008. The proposed validation sites and dates will be as follows:

Saturday Sept 27th Natchitoches-Rodeo Arena 3PM - 5PM
All animals must be tagged and DNA samples collected.
Any animals previously validated for The State Fair of Louisiana that intends to be exhibited at the 09 LSU State Show will be required to attend an LSU Ag Center Validation site to be validated for the 2009 LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show.
All animal entries declaring a breed classification must be classified at the validation site attended.
The responsibility of tagging animals and collecting DNA/hair samples will be that of the exhibitor and/or parent. Agents/Ag Teachers must be present and can assist.
Animals must be validated in either the exhibitors name or in family name ( Family consist of parents, legal guardians, brothers, and sisters.); if validated in family name when official entry forms are turned in at the parish level the animal validated must be entered in the name of the exhibitor which will show the animal at the District and State Livestock Show.
September 27th will be the final validation; no animals except Market Swine will be validated for the 2009 LSU AgCenter State Show after completion of September 27, 2008 validation.
All classifications at all sites will be conducted by the same three classifiers as selected by the LSU AgCenter.
PILOT PROGRAM: Market Hogs will be validated for the 2009 LSU State Livestock Show utilizing the following guidelines. Feedback from agents, ag teachers, exhibitors, parents, and other involved parties following this validation process will be collected and evaluated for future Market Hog validation procedure determinations.
Market Hogs will be validated during the week of December 1-6, 2008.
- All validations must be conducted in the presence and observed by agents/ag teachers.

Each parish will designate a central location or central locations where market hogs will be assembled and validated.

All market hogs must be brought to a designated location in the parish where hog will be entered.

Only validated market hogs will be eligible to be exhibited at LSU AgCenter district and state shows.

Hogs must be validated in the name of the exhibitor that the hog will be entered.

Market hogs will not be officially classified at these locations; however agents/ag teachers will assist exhibitors in determining correct classification for entries.

Agents will request tags and validation kits for market hogs from District Show Managers no later than November 1, 2008.

December 6, 2008 will be the absolute last opportunity to conduct parish market hogs validations for the 2009 LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show.
At-large membership can be obtained by any youth only if bona fide 4-H member age requirements are met and an organized 4-H club program is not available at the local school grade level. All deadlines apply to 4-H at large membership.
4-H dues/donations in Terrebonne Parish are $3.00 per member per year. Dues/donations for the local school club level may be added to the parish dues and should be paid at the same time. The total 4-H dues/donations should be a reasonable amount and should not exceed $5.00. All dues/donations are used for educational programming for 4-H youth.
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service policy on 4-H membership will be to allow potential 4-H club members a choice of full membership and participation rights in their parish residence or parish of school attendance. Home school students must select 4-H membership in the parish where they reside. Example: If a youth resides outside of Terrebonne Parish, but attends school in Terrebonne Parish, he/she may select 4-H membership in the parish of residence or parish of school attendance but not both.
All 4-H clubs in public, private and parochial schools must be documented to be non-discriminatory in their membership practices and operations.
4-H Members Compete In District and State 4-H Horse Shows
Congratulations to the following 4-H members Riley Lirette and Abby Theriot who competed at the District 4-H Horse Show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during the week of June 24th thru 27th and qualified to compete at the State 4-H Show held during the week of July 7th thru 11th in Monroe, Louisiana.
Congratulations to all 4-H Horse Project members and their families who devoted countless hours to preparing and conditioning these horses for the show ring.
