The annual Louisiana Sugarcane Festival and Fair was held September 27 - 29, 2007. Part of the activities included judging and exhibiting sugarcane. 4-H'ers and FFA members from the sugarcane producing parishes can enter the Sugarcane Judging Contest and also exhibit sugarcane grown on their farms.
In the Sugarcane Judging Contest teams are shown three stalks of four varieties of cane. Each group is judged by weight, maturity, damage, uniformity, wax coating, uniformity of cuts, and removal of dried mud. The four varieties are then ranked from highest to lowest quality.
4-H'ers or FFA members also can exhibit sugarcane grown on their own farm. An entry consists of three stalks of a single variety. The stalks should be uniform in size of barrel, length of joints, and overall length. The cane selected should be mature and heavy. The entries will be judged by the standards set above.
