Character Education Program Focused on Bullying
A character education program was conducted at St. Ignatius Elementary School in St. Landry Parish on Thursday, March 26, 2009, to address bullying. Four assemblies were conducted with age-appropriate activities: Pre-K through third-grade girls, Pre-K through third-grade boys, fourth- through eighth-grade girls and fourth- through eighth-grade boys. Prior to the assemblies, students viewed educational movies that had bullying issues reflected in them and also participated in a journaling exercise. Letters also were sent home to the parents concerning the issue of bullying and the character education program to address this issue.
During the assemblies; students and faculty were presented information concerning bullying through hands-on activities, reflection and peer-led role-playing scenarios. Students were presented with methods of dealing with and discouraging bullying at their school. They were encouraged to “Stay SAFE” when addressing bullying. SAFE stands for Stand positive and strong, Avoid the situation, Find support and Express your feelings. School administrator Cindy Prather reviewed the school's bullying policy with the students and faculty. LSU AgCenter faculty issued a challenge to each class to take a stand against bullying by making posters with each child’s footprint on it to hang in their classrooms and around the school. Educational materials and resources were provided for each class.
Approximately 300 students and faculty participated in this program.
This program was coordinated and conducted by the following AgCenter faculty: Lisa Benoit, St. Landry Parish 4-H Agent; Kim Jones, Instructor, 4-H Youth Development and Lanette Hebert, 4-H Regional Coordinator (Southwest Region).
