The 2010 St. James Parish 4-H Food Fest was held recently at Paulina Elementary School. 4-H'ers were able to participate in five local commodity cookery contests with 18 different divisions. Awards were presented to all who participated. Overall Food Fest Favorites winners were:
- Sugar Cookery - Lamy Guidry. St. Peter Chanel, with his Butter Crunch Cookie.
- Ground Beef Cookery- Cassie Stansburry, Gramercy Elementary - Meat Cabbage Casserole.
- Poultry Cookery - Allen White, St. James Community Club - Mahogany Grilled Chicken with Smokey Lime Sweet Potatoes and Cilantro Chimichurri.
- Egg Cookery - Joshua Sherman, St. Peter Chanel, with his Blueberry Delight.
- Seafood Cookery - Macie Folse, Paulina Elementary - Crab Dip.
Allen's Mahogany Grilled Chicken was also chosen as the Overall Food Fest Favorite.
The day began with 4-H'ers entering their dishes and were welcomed by Mr. Ken Guidry, St. James Parish 4-H agent. Opening exercises were led by 4-H club members Bailey Culotta, Elizabeth Coneglio and Noah Vicknair. Ken Guidry and 4-H Junior Leaders presented an educational program to help the 4-H'ers and their parents learn about eating better and exercising. A taste test of health drinks was held.
A 4-H Idol contest was also held in conjunction with the Food Fest. 4-H'ers Hannah Berthelot, Desiree Faucheux, Marissa Galates, Katy Roussel, Nydia Cooper, Breyette Jones, Macie Folse, Jenna Folse and Nykeisha Ricard entertained the audience with their talents.
Local volunteers who helped with judging were: Adele Schexnydre, Antoinette Ryals, Ann Buison, Megan Gravois, Kali Zammit, Denny Hymel, Steven Buggy LeMoine, school board member Carol Lambert, Rachel Schexnayder and Larry Roussel.
4-H Junior Leaders who assisted were Lauren Sherman, Hannah Guidry, Rebekah Taylor, Brandi Sieber, Lamy Guidry and Brianna Bourgeois.
