Eliminate Mowing Nightmare!
February is the time of year when several broadleaf weeds such as clover, oxalis, dandelion and Carolina geranium become quite noticeable throughout the home lawn. Left to flourish these weeds can weaken turf areas and contribute to a mowing nightmare with the first cutting in spring.

Strawberry Time for Homeowners!
Strawberries in the home garden are not a simple operation. Gardeners must control diseases, insects, weeds and birds. The plants must be planted correctly in a well-prepared site. Harvesting normally begins in mid-March and lasts 6-8 weeks.

A new nonprofit organization has been formed called the Burden Horticulture Society to provide assistance and fundraising for the enhancement and use of LSU AgCenter’s Burden Center according to Dr. Pat Hegwood, the Burden Center resident director. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry now has a list of all licensed horticulture/landscape professionals on their website. This is an excellent resource. Also is a list of upcoming ornamental horticulture events.

Following the best management practices (BMPs) given here should help keep your lawn in good condition. A healthy and properly cared for lawn will resist weeds and other pest problems; thus, a minimum of pesticide products will be needed. Basic lawn care consists of proper fertilizing, watering and mowing and appropriate pest management, as needed.
