Sugarcane Ripener Recommendations for 2008
In 2008, the following glyphosate formulations will be marketed for use as chemical ripeners in stubble sugarcane: Touchdown Total®, Roundup WeatherMAX®, and Roundup PowerMAX®; there may also be a limited supply of Polado L®. NOTE: THESE PRODUCTS ARE NOT LABELED FOR USE IN THE PLANT-CANE CROP.

THE 2007 LOUISIANA SUGARCANE VARIETY SURVEY
A sugarcane variety survey was conducted during the summer of 2007 by the county agents in the 23 sugarcane-growing parishes (counties) of Louisiana to determine the variety makeup and distribution across the industry in the state. The information presented in this report was summarized from those individual parish surveys.

Sugarcane Calendar of Events 2008
Listed are those events of interest to the Louisiana sugarcane industry for the Spring/Summer of 2008. The times listed for field days are for the actual start time of the function itself. Registration generally begins at least one hour prior to the event.

Efficient Use of Glyphosate in Fallowed Fields
This year growers are faced with increased fuel and herbicide costs. Now is the time to assess howfallow fields will be managed in preparation for planting.

Evaluation of Eptam (EPTC) in Fallowed Sugarcane Fields
In fallowed sugarcane fields glyphosate products are used to control perennial weeds includingbermudagrass, johnsongrass, and nutsedges. In some cases multiple applications of glyphosatecan be effective for weed control, but timing of application can be difficult depending on weatherconditions. There is interest in using a preemergence herbicide in conjunction with glyphosate tohelp control troublesome perennial weeds.
Sugarcane Weed Guide 2008
This weed control guide is prepared as a joint effort between Dr. Jim Griffin, School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA, and Drs. Ed Richard and Caleb Dalley, USDA-ARS SRRC, Sugarcane Research Unit, Houma, LA.
Winter Weed Control Programs for Sugarcane
Hopefully at this point fields are drained and preparations are underway for the coming growing season. There are some fields that are very clean and others with a mat of green vegetation completely covering the rows.
