Pet Show
Archery & Demonstration Workshops
I. POULTRY, EGG, AND SUGAR COOKERY CONTEST
A. Open to all 4-H members. Dishes are to be prepared at home and 2 servings brought to the contest ready to be tasted and judged.
B. A copy of the recipe on an 8 ½ x 11-inch sheet of paper (non-returnable) must be turned in with all dishes. All dishes must be labeled with name, grade, school, and category in which dish is to be entered on the back of the recipe.
C. Food Safety – All dishes must be chilled to refrigerator temperature and brought to the contest in a small ice chest or cooler. Dishes not following regulations will be disqualified! No exceptions. Dishes will be checked. No raw eggs in recipes!
D. Members may enter one dish in each category for the Parish contest, but may only compete in one category per Commodity (Egg, Poultry, Sugar) at the District Contest.
E. Only first place winners in the Parish Cookery will advance to the District 4-H Cookery Contest in Houma on Monday, April 27, 2009.
F. Poultry Cookery Regulations and Categories:
1. Chicken - a dish which contains a minimum of 2 pounds bone-in chicken or 1 pound of de-boned chicken meat. Chicken includes any of the following: Fryer, Capon, Rooster, Broiler, Baking Hen, Cornish/Game Hen.
2. Processed Poultry Products - a dish which contains a minimum of 12 oz. of processed poultry products. Processed poultry is poultry that has been changed (value added) for selling such as: breading, marinating, seasoning, etc. May include one or more of the following: Ground Turkey, Turkey Bacon, Turkey Sausage, Smoked Turkey, Turkey Ham, Turkey Rolls, Ground Chicken, Chicken Nuggets, Chicken Franks, Smoked Chicken, Chicken Strips, Canned Chicken.
3. Other Poultry Meat - a dish which contains a minimum of 2 pounds bone-in or 1 pound de-boned poultry meat from a bird other than chicken or turkeys. Examples: Duck, Quail, Pheasant, Pigeon, Guinea, Goose, Grouse, Ostrich, Emu or Dove.
G. Egg Cookery Regulations:
1. The egg dish must contain a minimum of 4 eggs. The dish may contain a minimum of 4 egg yolks, 4 egg whites, 4 whole eggs or a combination as long as 4 eggs must be busted to get the ingredients. No raw eggs will be allowed in the final product.

H. Sugar Cookery Regulations
1. Bring a prepared sugar dish to the contest. The dish must use at least one-half (1/2) cup of 100% sugar. The sugar used in the recipe may be granulated white sugar, brown (light or dark) sugar, powdered sugar, or any combination of the above. Dishes made from “scratch” are preferred; however, dishes containing mixes are permitted as long as 1/2 cup of additional sugar is added to the recipe. This might be in the form of a glaze, enhancement ingredient, or other addition to the mix. Splenda is not considered an acceptable ingredient for this contest.

II. COMMODITY AMBASSADOR TALKS
A. Commodities:
1. Poultry- Chicken or Turkey
2. Egg
B. Divisions:
I - 4-6 Grades
II - 7-9 Grades
III - 10-12 Grades (Must be 15 by Jan. 1 for District and State Contest)
C. Requirements
1. Division I (4-6 grades) - Must design a poster (22x28 inches) relating to one of the commodity themes, present a 2-3 minute explanation of the poster, and respond to judges’ questions. No dish required!
2. Division II (7-9 grades) - Design a poster (22x28 inches) relating to one of the commodity themes, prepare an essay, not to exceed 500 words or three typed pages (12-14 spaces per inch double-spaced) of the poster subject, present a 2- 3 minute explanation of the poster and respond to judges’ questions. Turn in essay to judges! No dish required!
3. Division III (10-12 grades) - Present a 5-8 minute illustrated talk following the specific regulations for the commodity selected. No Power Point presentations allowed! Only the egg commodity talk requires a dish!

E. State Contest – First place Parish winners qualify for the State Contest in Baton Rouge in May. No notes can be used at the State Contest!
III. PET SHOW CONTEST REGULATIONS
A. Categories:
Large Pets - Dogs, Cats and Rabbits (no cattle or horses allowed).
Small Pets - Rodents, Amphibians, Fish, Birds, and Others.
B. Contest Rules
1. Only one exhibit per 4-H member per species except for the dog classes. You may exhibit two dogs, only one per class! Ex: one cat, one rabbit, etc.
2. Dogs must be leashed; all other pets in a cage or box. No pets are allowed in the building.
3. Members must be able to easily control his/her pet. Please clean up after your pets. Your parents may also take your pet home after the competition is complete.
4. Pets should be well mannered around other animals and well groomed.
5. Dogs/cats must be vaccinated for rabies.
6. Dogs – For the dog show only, there will be two separate classes - Obedience Judging and Dog Care Judging. Members may compete in each class with the same dog or with different dogs as long as they only have one dog per class.
A. Dog Obedience Class Judging – Dogs should be on a training collar with about a six foot lead. Members will lead the dog in a circle and dog should obey these commands – Sit, Heel, Stop, and Go/Walk. Members may also demonstrate their dog’s obedience and tricks!
B. Dog Care Judging - Members will be asked the questions as described in regulation ‘D’ below.
C. Parents may assist members with control of pets but are not allowed to answer questions for members!
D. 4-H members will be asked questions concerning the care (feeding, housing, health, etc.) and grooming of their pet to determine members who do the best job of raising their pet. Members may bring health records.
E. Trophies will be awarded to the First Place winner in each category. Others will receive ribbons. Plaques will be awarded to the Outstanding Large and Small Pet.
NOTE: The Pet Show will be cancelled if the weather is Bad (Rain, extreme cold). Please call the 4-H Office if in doubt. The number is 985-785-4473.
IV. DECORATED PILLOWCASE
A. Open to all 4-H members.
B. Bring a pillowcase that YOU sewed either at the Sewing Workshop at the 4-H Office or at home. The pillowcase should be decorated and will be judged on your sewing and your decorations.
C. Call the 4-H Office at 985-785-4473 if you need the pillowcase instructions.
V. ARCHERY WORKSHOP
A. Open to all 4-H members. All equipment will be provided! Members will shoot Recurve bows.
B. Members will learn the parts of a bow and an arrow, basic Archery shooting skills, and Archery Safety. Members will shoot for practice and competition. Competition – one round of shooting will be held for competition and awards will be presented to the winners.
C. Members wishing to compete at the Regional Archery Shoot in Lake Charles, Louisiana on April 24 will be informed of regulations for the Regional Shoot.
VI. DEMONSTRATION WORKSHOP
A. Open to all 4-H members.
B. Members will learn how to do a demonstration in preparation for demonstration contests hosted at Achievement Day on May 2, 2009.
