4-H University Article
Every June hundreds of 4-H members gather in Baton Rouge at the Louisiana State University campus to participate in the annual LSU AgCenter’s 4-H University, formerly known as 4-H Short Course. 4-H members look forward to attending the annual three-day event where they reside on the LSU campus, compete in over 40 different project-related statewide contests, participate in interactive educational programs, and establish friendships that last a lifetime with people throughout Louisiana.
There are two categories in which to participate at 4-H University: Clover College and 4-H Contests. If this is your first year attending 4-H University, you may want to take part in Clover College. To participate in Clover College, you choose one of the following educational tracks to attend: Are You Ready for College?, Citizenship Louisiana Focus, Creative Forces: Youth Educational Theater Corps, Exploring the World of Sports, Forensics: The First 48, Make Your Health Rock!, Operation: Military Kids, Robotics: Our Challenge – Your Solution!, and Louisiana’s Paradise. Clover College participants join other 4-H’ers from throughout the state to attend these educational classes and learn about new ideas and programs that they can later bring back to their parish 4-H club!
The other category of 4-H University is competing in 4-H contests. There are over 40 contests in which 4-H’ers can participate. Members gain a more in depth knowledge about a subject by studying to compete with other 4-H members throughout the entire state of Louisiana. Members may have the opportunity to walk across the stage at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Awards Night to receive a blue ribbon if they place within the top contestants in the state. Top winners are awarded educational trips that are sometimes out-of-state!
Overall, attending 4-H University is an experience that many never forget!
