"Get Your Goat Day" in Red River Parish was held on March 26, 2008 as a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting the Red River Livestock Supporters’ Scholarship Fund. A scholarship is awarded to an individual that has been active in the livestock projects through the high school years.
The livestock exhibitors that organized and worked the fundraiser were: Cody Garrett, Hanna Garrett, Morgan Garrett, Darrell McLemore, Ashleigh Nolen, Brandon Nolen, Jacob Nolen, Michael Arnold, Alicia Walsworth, D. J. Rambin, and Stonie Harris. Parent volunteers who drove the exhibitors around town were Felicia Garrett, Jo Rambin, and Kim Durr.
Not only was this a fundraiser, but a learning experience for these 4-H'ers. Through this experience the exhibitors were able to gain a sense of independence by organizing the fundraiser and going from donor to donor by themselves. This experience also gave the youth a sense of belonging in the community and a sense of generosity by the examples given from the community. Also, life skills of communication, responsibility and respect were learned as they had to interact with members of the community, keep accurate records as well as keep the goat comfortable and fed.
