Eight youth and three adults from Louisiana traveled to the Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington D. C. on July 1-7, 2007.
Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a citizenship program conducted by the National 4-H Council for high school youth. For seven weeks during the summer. Delegations of 14-19 year-olds from across the country attend this six-day program at the National 4-H Conference Center, just outside Washington, D.C. This program gives participants hands-on opportunities to learn and practice skills that promote “Better Citizens Today, Better Leaders Tomorrow.” Participants learn by attending workshops, committees, field trips, and social events.
Delegates attending the conference from Louisiana were Nicholas Alday, St. Charles Parish; Rebecca Aycock, Claiborne; Colt Brister, Rapides; Christopher Burch, Claiborne; Conrad Cable, Union; Sara Menard, Caddo; Curtis Randle, Bienville, and Raven Scott, St. Charles. Chaperoning the group were John and Carol Remy from Union and Shannon Dietz from Iberville.
While the delegates were in Washington, D. C. they were able to tour Mt. Vernon, Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln, Korea and Vietnam Memorials, Washington National Cathedral, Smithsonian Museums, Jefferson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Iwo Jima Memorials. They also went to a Washington National vs. Chicago Cubs baseball game in which President Bush was in attendance and they got to observe the fireworks display on July 4th from the Iwo Jima Memorial.
The Louisiana delegation would like to thank our local congressional representatives for hosting our group while we were on Capitol Hill. They provided tours of the capitol, ate lunch and visited with us most of the day. Tours were provided by Representative Bobby Jindal, Congressmen Jim McCrery, and Congressmen Rodney Alexander’s offices.
