How To Care For Cut Christmas Trees

Purchase a Christmas tree holder that can hold a gallon or more of water.
Christmas is fast approaching, and now is the time to think about that tree. There is a growing popularity for the artificial pre-lit varieties; but for many families, Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without a fragrant natural tree gracing the living room.

A properly cared for Christmas tree can provide several weeks of enjoyment. By following the steps and safety tips below, you can be sure your tree will last throughout the holidays.

Here are two ways to purchase Christmas trees.
  • Retail lots - These are temporary lots set up in shopping centers, at discount stores, service stations, etc.
  • Choose and cut farms - Most farms have areas or rows of trees marked for harvest, and consumers are free to wander about and select one for cutting.

Once you have selected the right size and shape, check the freshness of the tree. Grasp a limb in one hand and gingerly run your hand toward the end of the branch, going in the same direction of the needles (not backward and forward).  Every tree will shed a few needles, but if you end up with a handful of them, find another tree.  Another method for checking the freshness is to move or shake the tree. You should not see an excessive amount of needles fall to ground.

After you get the tree home, keep it in water in a sheltered cool place until you are ready to display it. If you are going to set the tree up immediately, make a new straight cut across the base of the trunk approximately 1/2 to 1 inch above the original cut. Place the tree in a stand that will hold a gallon of water or more.

Water your tree every day. A cut Christmas tree can easily soak up a gallon or more of water the first 24 hours it is indoors!  Moisture is critical to maintaining freshness, so check frequently.  If the tree is without moisture for even a few hours, the sap may seal the cut end of the trunk, preventing the tree from efficiently absorbing new water.
Mist the branches daily.

For safety, keep the tree away from heat sources such as vents, fireplaces, radiators and lighted candles.

The beauty of a Louisiana-grown Christmas tree will make your holidays memorable.  Merry Christmas.
