On October 24, during 4-H Officer Training, at False River Academy, 4-H parents, volunteers, Club Leaders, and Junior Leaders had the opportunity to participate in a Service Learning Training. Lisa Arcemont, South Central and Crescent Regional Coordinator presented the training.
Mrs. Arcemont taught those in attendance the difference between service-learning and community service. She provided information on the Experiential Learning Model and informed them how the Service-Learning Cycle works. Mrs. Arcemont encouraged those at the training to incorporate youth voice. She provided tips on completing a needs assessment including how to identity a service project. Mrs. Arcemont gave the audience steps on completing a project including: planning, preparing youth, structuring reflection, evaluating the impact, and celebration/recognition. The group was surprised to learn of the benefits of service-learning from youth benefits-personal development, civic responsibility, and academics to community and organizational benefits. Mrs. Arcemont gave the group numerous resources including a Service Reflection Toolkit, 4-H Risk Management check list, Service-Learning Cycle, and Community Service and Service Learning Comparison.
