On Tuesday, April 15, 2008, 4-H’ers from Pointe Coupee traveled to Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond to represent Pointe Coupee 4-H at the Area Commodity Cookery Contest. These 4-H’ers captured 1st with their commodity dish at one of two parish 4-H cookeries.
Before the Area Cookery, 4-H Agent, Layne Langley, worked with the 4-H’ers so that their recipe would score a perfect 20 on the recipe evaluation. Items judged on the recipe included: clear instructions for combining ingredients, dish meeting contest and division requirements, ingredients listed in order used, name of recipe given, size of pan stated, and number of servings given. All recipes were submitted for judging prior to the April 15 contest.
Upon arriving at the Area Cookery, youth registered and checked in their ice chest and dishes. They proceeded to set up their entries and garnish their dishes. After a Welcome and instructions, the 4-H’ers took a parish photo and attended a nutrition session led by SLU Nursing Students.
After intense judging the awards were presented. Hats off to the following 4-H’ers for an outstanding job: Seafood Cookery: Oyster – Katherine Robillard - 2nd. Crab – William Jewell – 3rd. Shrimp – Ciara Collins – Red. Fish & Other Seafood – Maddy Barbay – Blue. Crawfish – Emma Daigrepont – Blue.
Beef Cookery: Low Calorie – Kayla Bergeron – Blue. One Dish Meal – Carley Major – 2nd. Quick & Easy – Mattie Bollich – Red.
