Family Nutrition Program in Plaquemines Parish

Students participate in hands-on vegetable gardening activities.
The Plaquemines Parish FNP Program is administered by the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service.  LSU AgCenter Extension staff work closely with agencies such as: Office of Family Support; Commodity Food Distribution; Head Start parents and Children; Food Banks; Low-income Housing Residents; and Medicaid and WIC Recipients.

The mission of the adult FNP program is to provide nutrition education to families with young children and those eligible for Food Stamps.  using participant centered learning, agents and/or nutrition educators provide a series of lessons in a group setting that include topics such as dietary guidelines, MrPyramid, resource management, gardening and food safety.  For additional information on the program, visit the Food Stamp Nutrition Connection web site at:  http://www.nal.usda.gov/foodstamp/index.html

The FNP program is delivered to the public in a vareity of ways.  They can provide individual or group classes.  the series of four lessons can be customized to meet the audience's needs.

the location of the classes is also flexible to meet the needs of the audience.  Classes can be held in neighborhood centers, LSU AgCenter Cooperative Extension meeting rooms, schools and other community locations when classroom space is available.  Classes are taught from selected curricula with the family's needs in mind.  FNP teaches families:  How to read food labels; How to make wise food choices; How to grocery shop to save money; How to maintain a healthy weight; How to be physically active each day; How to prepare and cook food safely and Gardening to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.

FNP and Food Stamp Nutrition Education Goal is "To provide educational programs that increase, within a limited budget, the likelihood of all Food Stamp recipients making healthy food choices consistent with the most recent dietary advice reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food Guidance System, currently know as MyPyramid."
