New Master Gardeners

On November 28, 2007, ten of twelve recent graduates of the Master Gardeners program sponsored by LSU met at Mrs. Vera Brewer's home on Oak Grove Road for their graduation ceremony. Officiating were Natchitoches Parish agent Hubert Wilkerson and Sabine Parish agent Kristy Corley.

Following the ceremony, the graduates joined members of the Master Gardeners Association of Natchitoches Parish in Mrs. Brewer's greenhouse to make hypertufa pots. Hypertufa is an attempt to replicate English stone pots, using a combination of Portland cement, vermiculite, peat moss and water. A variety of molds were used, including cardboard boxes, plastic basins and buckets, and styrofoam vases. The finished products will be offered for sale at Bloomin' on the Bricks in March, along with many homegrown plants.

After the work session, a potluck lunch featuring beef and chicken chilies, salad, corn breads, and desserts were enjoyed by all.

The master gardeners program is a volunteer service organization, whose only criteria is a love of gardening and a desire to share that love and expertise with the community. Anyone interested in joining may contact the LSU AgCenter at 357-2224.
