Christmas Festival Parade
Natchitoches Parish kicked off its 4-H Centennial Celebration during the 81st Annual Natchitoches Christmas Festival and Festival of Lights.
Over 100,000 visitors witnessed parish 4-Her’s decked out in green and wearing the famous clover, tossing everything from green candy to cups to t-shirts and hats, all which bared the 4-H clover and centennial logo.
The Natchitoches Christmas Festival is one of the oldest community-based holiday celebrations in the nation. It is held on the first weekend of December and people enjoy a parade, live entertainment, the famous Natchitoches meat pies, arts and crafts and a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the scenic Cane River Lake.
Parish 4-Her’s were asked to write an essay on “What they would do to celebrate 100 Years of 4-H in Louisiana?” Twenty-five outstanding youth were selected from over ten schools to ride the float themed “Lighting up Natchitoches, 100 Years.” Entries to participate in the festival parade are invitation only and organizations are selected by the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and the Natchitoches Christmas Festival Parade Committee.
“What better way for us to kick off the 4-H Centennial Anniversary and what better way for Natchitoches to see that 4-H still has a strong, longstanding presence in our community,” said Gwen Taylor Fontenot, FCS Agent and former Natchitoches Parish 4-Her. Laura Brumbaugh, parish 4-H Agent, initiated the float idea and has many monthly celebrations in store for 2008. “I hope to get a lighted green clover on the river bank next year and a really big float,” stated Brumbaugh, as her dreams for the Natchitoches 4-H program seem even bigger and brighter for the upcoming year.
