On June 3, 2009, 4-H'ers from Natchitoches Parish joined hundreds of 4-H’ers representing the 64 parishes of Louisiana on the steps of the state Capitol. The annual event gives youth the opportunity to see firsthand the “hustle and bustle” of the legislative session. This year’s 4-H Day at the Capitol was of particular importance since budget cuts in higher education could ultimately affect the 4-H youth development program. Sen. Gerald Long took time out of his busy schedule to welcome the 4-H'ers to “their house.” He told the youth of his experiences as a 4-H'er and that he values and supports the work, volunteering and leadership that they are exemplifying in the community. His finals words were “keep up the good work.” Parish Chair and interim 4-H Agent Gwen Fontenot presented Senator Long with an appreciation gift -- a mini 2008 framed Christmas Festival poster.
