2008 4-H Day at the Capitol

y
Madison Parish 4-H Club Members with Senator Francis Thompson and Representive Andy Anders.
Madison 4-H was on hand with a bus load of 40 youth and adult volunteers, who joined the 1500 other 4-Hers and volunteer leaders from across Louisiana, in Baton Rouge for the sixth annual 4-H Day at the Capitol, June 5, 2008. The event included a rally on the Capitol steps, meeting with legislators, and a peek at the Capitol building.

The annual event gives 4-Hers a chance to meet their legislators and learn more about state government. It also provides an opportunity to keep legislators informed of local 4-H program highlights and accomplishments through tokens of appreciation which this year included a "4-H Talking Points" bulletin (see link) and 4-H umbrella. In addition, each participant received a free 4-H commemorative T-Shirt highlighting 100 years of 4-H in Louisiana and provided by the Louisiana 4-H Foundation, Capitol Day event sponsor.

Following the rally, the Madison group spent the afternoon at the Blue Bayou Water park to cool off in the 95 degree heat. Youth and adults alike enjoyed the variety of water slides, pools and amusement rides available.

4-H is the youth development and outreach program of the nation's Land-Grant University System, and it is operated in Louisiana through the LSU AgCenter. The 4-H program attempts to provide learning experiences and involvement in activities that teach young people the life skills and values they need to be better citizens and future leaders.
