Program Highlights Family and Consumer Sciences The LSU AgCenter is combating childhood obesity through Smart Bodies. More than 1,200 students’ weight, height and waist circumference were measured to evaluate the impact of the program. It consists of three components:
- Body Walk Exhibit, a 35–by 45-foot walk-through representing the human body. Students walk through and explore the brain, mouth, stomach, small intestines, heart, lungs, bones, muscles and skin to learn the effects that food has on organs.
- Organ Wise Guys-characters that help children understand physiology and healthy behaviors through books, games, dolls and videos.
- Take 10! in which teachers educate students on nutrition concepts and doing 10 minutes of exercise. Volunteers and school faculty are the success in this program. The Lincoln Health Foundation contributed money for additional resources. Through reassessing measurements, pre-test/ post-test evidence reflected improvement in nutritional knowledge.
4-H Youth Development Research shows that Lincoln Parish 4-H meets needs identified by youth as essen-tial to their positive development. Through offering 4-H club programming to 22 par-ish school clubs, a parish-wide 4-H Junior Leadership Club and two project clubs in the area of outdoor skills, Lincoln Parish 4-H provides a sense of belonging to youth. Research suggests that belonging may be the most important positive need in the lives of youth. 4-H provides youth the opportunity to have their physical and emo-tional needs met while belonging to a group. The Lincoln Parish 4-H program cur-rently enrolls 823 youth and includes a diverse membership of various races, cul-tural backgrounds and population demographics. The LSU AgCenter provides them with educational presentations, service projects and educational resources.
Agriculture and Natural Resources The Lincoln Parish ANR program offers quarterly meetings for cattle producers. These meetings give producers the most up-to-date information for making eco-nomical decisions for the cattle operations. Lincoln Parish also has an active Master Gardener program that has approximately 72 graduates who give back the knowl-edge learned in these classes to the community through volunteering in horticulture-related activities. Throughout the year demonstrations, displays and meetings are done, related to water conservation in an effort to keep the public aware of declining groundwater levels of the Sparta Aquifer.
