Marguerite Frentz is the American Wetlands Conservation Corps Volunteer for Lincoln Parish.

My name is Marguerite Frentz and I am a member of the America’s Wetland Conservation Corps (AWCC). For those readers unaware of the wetland conditions in LA, shame on you. However, let me start off by explaining a little bit about what is in need of saving. Louisiana loses 24 miles of coastal land daily. The Louisiana coastal wetlands are known to be one of the most significant estuaries in the world. Millions of waterfowl spend their winters along the beautiful coast of our state as well as a vast amount of animals that chose to live along the coast year round.

As a whole, we are only as strong as our weakest link. Even if there are a few people who are concerned with the preservation or restoration of the wetlands, we will not succeed with fixing our coastal problems until we are all on board. We all need to do our own part. We need to realize the direction the world is turning and stand for a change in direction. No more excuses.

As I have been apart of this program I have become more aware of the need for change. I have found that education of Louisiana wetland loss and other environmental issues are continual processes. The wetlands have been disappearing for a long time. It is already too late. Let us not wait any longer until we take responsibly for our land.

Today, I encourage you to take a stand against the easy way. Instead of passing the task, go out and make a difference. Go out and plant a tree. For planting the tree might not change the world, but I guarantee it will change you.
