One hundred six Lafourche Parish 4-H members, five junior leaders and five adult leaders attended Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center in Pollock, LA July 5-9, 2010. “Get In Touch with 4-H at Camp Grant Walker” was the theme of this year’s summer camp. 4-H’ers from Lafourche were joined by an additional 400 4-H members from Lasalle, Jeff Davis, St. Charles, Acadia, West Baton Rouge and Sabine Parishes.
Each club member selected an educational track to experience each morning. Track topics were: Outdoor Adventures-including hunter safety certification, Dramatic Arts, Explore Louisiana: Wetlands, Wildlife & Water!, Get Ready; Get SET…Science, Engineering & Technology and RECHARGE - Food & Fitness!
Each afternoon the groups rotated to participate in the following activities: volleyball, cycling, arts and crafts, archery, team-building, canoeing, line dancing and technology.
Evening activities included a presentation by two police officers, Christopher Bianez and Lindy Privett from Plano, Texas who used a trampoline and martial arts as they presented their 45-minute message. They encouraged the young 4-H'ers to stay safe, avoid the negative and destructive consequences of drug abuse and violence and choose positive activities. The three messages they left them with were to do the right thing, choose friends carefully and be drug free. They also taught youth that to have a great friend, you need to be a great friend. They also encouraged them to befriend those who are shy or may not feel included. Additional evening activities included a watching movie, dancing, swimming or doing arts and crafts projects.
Five high school members of the parish Junior Leader club served as counselors: Christopher Guillot, Benton Troxclair, Hunter Weimer, Meghan Uzee and Amber Ledet. Adult leaders were: Taylor Bernard, Brandi Melancon, Adrienne Rousse, Alison Jennings and Lafourche Parish Extension agents Donna Ayo and Katie Wilcox.
