The beef, seafood and rice cookery contest was held in conjunction with Fall Fun Day November 7th. All dishes were prepared at home, from scratch, using a recipe. 4-H'ers learned the importance of following a recipe and were encouraged to select recipes that were low in caloreis, fat and sodium. Approximately 75 dishes were entered. Results are as follows:

Iberia Parish Fall Fun Day was held Saturday, November 7 at Iberia Middle School. 4-H'ers from across the parish competed in a bicycle rodeo and participated in a Step Into Fitness Workshop.

The 2010 4-H Contest Day will be held Saturday, February 6th at Iberia Middle School. Four-H'ers will be able to participate in over 25 different speaking contests. Various educational workshops will also be held for elementary students. Lastly, the Fashion Contest will be held this day.

Journey Into Jobs will be held December 3rd at Sugarland Elementary. This is an annual event where 4-H'ers interview people representing various jobs/careers, as well as being interviewed by judges.

The Iberia Parish 4-H Clover Chatter newsletters provide information to parish 4-H members and contain activities, events and deadlines occurring monthly.

This spreadsheet-based, decision-making tool is based on the annual LSU AgCenter enterprise budgets for beef cattle. The spreadsheet allows producers to alter assumptions and print a projected budget based on their individual operations.

The Livestock Indemnity Program was a new, permanent disaster payment program created in the 2008 Farm Bill. The rules for this program have recently been published,and this document informs producers and other interested parties on how to determine if they are eligible for the program.

The 2009 4-H Sugarcane Rabbit Show was held Saturday, September 26, in conjunction with the Sugarcane 4-H Livestock Show at SugArena in New Iberia. The 4-H rabbit project helps 4-H members gain knowledge and skills concerning rabbits. Also this project provides 4-H members opportunities to learn life skills through participation in a series of learning experiences. 4-H'ers must care daily for their rabbits and work with them in preparation for rabbit shows. A prescribe burn plan should be completed by each grower before the harvest season. One plan can be completed for an entire farm or for an individual field. All information needed to plan and conduct a burn and for comments concerning the burn is contained in the form. The plan was devised to help farm operators control the burning of sugarcane to lessen their impact on public health and welfare, which includes pre-burn considerations and weather information.

The October 6, 2009, edition of the Louisiana Food and Fiber Monitor. This newsletter describes the current production and marketing environments facing the agriculture and forestry sectors. "Producers continue to be busy with harvest. For somecrops, producers are putting the finishing touches onthe 2009 year while for others; harvest has juststarted or is in the heart of the harvest season."

This short publication provides information on cultural practices related to wheat production, including planting dates and rates and fertilizer recommendations.

The Iberia 4-H Junior Leader Newsline Newsletter provides information to Junior Leader members on educational programs, service-learning activities, other events and monthly deadlines. This volume is for the 2009-2010 school year, and the newsletters are published from September to May.

A Louisiana 4-H team placed fifth overall in the National 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program. Team members were Micah Patout and Ridge Miguez of Iberia Parish, Jeremy Dixon of West Feliciana Parish and Deanna Jason of West Baton Rouge Parish. Sixteen teams from across the United States attended the competition, in which participants were introduced to a tract of land and asked to identify the practices they would use to manage wildlife.

Twelve 4-H members in grades 4-8 were selected statewide for the 2009 Junior Wildlife Tour. 4-H record books on Discovering 4-H, wildlife, environment, insects and aquaculture were submitted as part of the competition. The trip was held in August of 2009 at the LUMCON (Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium) facility in Fouchon. Iberia 4-H'ers Florencia Scaglia, Andrew Picheloup and Brennan Trahan were selected to attend along with LSU AgCenter 4-H agent Monique Sanchez.

Seventh-grade 4-H members from around Iberia Parish recently were given the opportunity to experience 4-H Challenge Camp. 4-H Challenge Camp allows youth to experience various challenges from a hands-on approach.

4-H Camp is the statewide event that is both an educational and fun learning experience. The event is held in Pollock, Louisiana, on the LSU AgCenter's 80-acre campsite at the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center.

4-H’ers from across Iberia Parish were named blue ribbon winners in various contests Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the final session of the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H University in Baton Rouge. About 1,800 people from across the state participated in the 4-H University events on the LSU campus June 23-25, which included competition for trips and prizes, educational activities, as well as the election of state 4 H officers.

4-H members from Iberia Parish recently got a chance to participate in the first ever Iberia Parish horse clinic and trail ride held at Bayou Boarding facilities in New Iberia. The ninth annual Iberia 4-H Foundation Golf Tournament was held Friday, April 24, 2009, at Sugar Oaks Golf Country Club in New Iberia. All proceeds from this annual event go toward funding the Iberia Parish 4-H program.

The Cow/Heifer Investment Decision Tool was developed as a farm planning decision aid for Louisiana cow/calf producers. This decision aid is an Excel spreadsheet that allows cow/calf producers to project if investing in a heifer is a profitable investment and the maximum dollar amount that can be paid for the animal. Producers are able to adjust prices, calf sale weights and cash cow costs to determine the amount that could potentially be paid for a cow/heifer.

The annual 4-H Parish Rabbit & Poultry Show was held Thursday, February 12, 2009 at SugArena in New Iberia. Four-H'ers exhibited rabbits and their 3 best broilers at their respective shows. Broiler exhibitors were able to qualify for the state poultry show. Approximately 50 4-H'ers, parents and volunteers attended this educational activity.

The annual State 4-H Livestock Show was held at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, LA February 14-21, 2009. Iberia Parish was well represented with 4-H'ers participating in breeding, commercial heifer, market animals and showmanship events. The Mexican Rice Borer is a pest of rice, sugarcane and other similar crops such as sorghum. It was first collected in Louisiana in December 2008 near the town of Vinton. It has not been identified in Louisiana Sugarcane, but it is something we must all be on the look out for. See attached for background information.

This report presents projected cost estimates for sugarcane production in Louisiana for the 2009 crop year. Cost estimates are included for all phases of sugacane production including seedbed preparation, planting, plant-cane and stubble-crop operations and harvest. Whole-farm projected income and expense statements are also included for harvest of sugarcane through second, third and fourth stubble (ratoon) crops.

The 2008 Iberia Parish Sugarcane Variety Survey results are listed in the attached form. The variety survey information is very important on a local and statewide basis since it allows us to monitor the progress of varieties and their acceptance by producers. Surveys can also be used by us to warn producers of potential problems if they are keeping varieties with serious problems.

The term biofuels refers to any fuel – in a solid, liquid or gas form – made from the breakdown or decay of a biological feedstock source. This two-page fact sheet presents some basic information about biofuel production in the United States and in Louisiana and briefly describes current research on biofuels being conducted by the LSU AgCenter.

The annual Iberia Parish 4-H Livestock Show was held Friday and Saturday, January 23 & 24 at SugArena in New Iberia. Approximately 100 4-H members exhibited some 120 animals in the beef, goat, sheep and swine categories. The Louisiana Key Club Award Program gives recognition to high school 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and parish. Fashion Camp is planned and conducted by the State 4-H Fashion Board under the direction of faculty advisors and with the assistance of board leaders. A few of the educational activities for campers include: PJ’s, T-shirt pillow, Sleep mask, Classy night-time book cover, along with a Service Learning Project: Letters to Military Kids whose family member is deployed. A modeling workshop is planned as well as a fashion show featuring “4-H'ers”!

This combined effort of the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Council of Farmer Cooperatives provides a hands-on opportunity for our youth to learn about the cooperative process of business by creating and managing their own co-op while having a great time at camp.

Based upon those expectations, people then need the information and training to enable them to complete the job successfully.
