WINTER FOOD FESTIVAL

All 4-H members are invited to participate in the annual 4-H Winter Food Festival set for Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at the Colfax Bank Meeting Room. Registration is at 4:30 p.m. and judging starts at 5 p.m. This is a cooking contest – it's lots of fun and easy to do!!! All cooking is done at home, and the completed dish is brought to the contest where judges grade it on its appearance, its taste and the written recipe. You also take a short test on nutrition/food safety.

The contest divisions are: Pecan Cookery, Sweet Potato Cookery, and Ground Beef Cookery. A contestant may enter one dish in each division for a total of three dishes. Compete rules are available as a separate flyer from your 4-H agent or 4-H school sponsor or at the web at www.lsuagcenter.com/grant

4-H SHOOTING SPORTS

If you like the outdoors and want to learn about firearm safety and improve your marksmanship you need to join the 4-H Shooting Sports Club. 4-H’ers can participate in workshops and contest related to archery, rifle, rifle, shotgun and pistol. Call the 4-H Office for more information or obtain an entry form from the 4-H agent at your club meeting. Any parent wants to get certified to assist with the shooting sports program please contact Mr. Rodney.

8TH ANNUAL "CATCH-PHRASE FOR CAMP" CONTEST!

What’s a good theme for 4-H Summer Camp? Send us your most creative ideas for a slogan -- in seven words or less. To enable the campers to have more of a choice in the design of their T-shirts, illustrations must accompany the phrase and will be part of the contest. The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and “catchy”, capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp T-shirt. The winner will receive a monetary award from the LAE 4-HA (Louisiana Association of Extension 4-H Agents). Think fast – the deadline is November 2. Submissions must also include the following: 1. Full name and age of person submitting the slogan; 2. Parish/4-H Club; 3. Complete mailing address; 4. Telephone number

4-H PET SHOW

On November 6, 2009, there will be a 4-H Pet Show held in conjunction with the Children’s day at the Louisiana Pecan Festival. You enter the day of show and there is no entry fee. The event is open to children ages 7-19. Ribbons will be given to first through fifth place in each category and champion ribbons will be given to each category champion. A trophy will be awarded to OVERALL GRAND CHAMPION PET AND OVERALL BEST DRESSED PET. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. For more information on the pet show and available classes, contact Mr. Rodney or visit our website at www.lsuagcenter.com/grant.

BECOMING A 4-H JUNIOR LEADER - HERE'S HOW

So, what is a 4-H Junior Leader? To be a 4-H Junior Leader, you must be active in after school club for grades 8-12. These meetings are like regular 4-H club meetings, with officers and procedures followed. The difference in Junior Leader Club is that you will have opportunities to participate in various types of activities. Those activities are organizing and conducting service learning projects or activities, participating as camp counselors for different camps throughout the year and SUMMER CAMP.

Of course, we do have social get together and do fun things too! If you are interested we will be having our first meeting on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. on the Grant Parish Extension Office in Colfax.  For more information, contact Mr. Rodney at 627-3675 or rjohnson@agcenter.lsu.edu.

2010 FASHION CAMP

The theme for the camp is It’s “SEW” Much Fun in a Winter Wonderland! The Fashion Board choose this theme to reflect their personal excitement about fashion and the attitude that campers will adopt as they travel through the experiences at camp. The camp schedule kicks off on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:00 a.m. on January 24. Campers needing to drive in Friday night may request Camp Grant Walker overnight accommodations.

Each parish has the opportunity to send a maximum of two 4-H campers (10-13 years old) and one adult leader (project leader, junior leader, parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.) for camp. If you want to attend please contact Mr. Rodney at the 4-H office at (318) 627-3675 or (318) 229-9514

4-H HOLIDAY FUN

Each year during the Thanksgiving break, 4-H’ers participate in fun holiday workshops where they make all kinds of cool things for themselves and their family. Three fun-filled workshops will be held at the parish 4-H Office the week of November 23-25, 2009. Topics will include food preparation, electricity, and leather. To register for the workshop you need to send registration form and fee to 4-H office. Registration will take place October 19-23 to allow everyone a fair chance to register. It will be first come first serve to workshops. No registration will be taken be prior to Oct. 19-23.  Limit 15 4-H Youth for all workshops.You can download a registration form at www.lsuagcenter.com/grant.

  • Tuesday, Nov. 24 – 9 a.m.-noon. Electricity Workshop- 4-H’ers will learn electrical safety tips and construct their own 4-H lamp. The cost is $10.00
  • Tuesday,Nov.  24 – 1 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. Leather Workshop-learn about leather care and make a couple nice leather projects to take home with them. The cost is $7.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 25 -9 a.m.-1 p.m. – Oh-So-Healthful Italian Cooking for Kids Workshop - Menu: Leafy Greens Little Italy Salad, Oh-So-Easy Chicken Parmesan, Tiramisu

LIVESTOCK NEWS

SPRING LIVESTOCK SHOW
 (PLEASE NOTE CHANGE)

The possession date for spring livestock show will be November 2, 2009 for beef breeding, commercial heifers, market lambs, breeding goats and dairy animals. All market and commercial animals will be validated and tagged on November 2, 2009 at the 4-H Office from 3:00 - 6:30 p.m. (Validation and tagging is mandatory).

Possession date for market hogs will be December 3, 2009 and all market hogs must be tagged and validated at the Grant Parish 4-H Office on December 3, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

RABBIT INFORMATION

Those interested in breeding meat pens to show at the Central District Livestock Show should breed does October 30-November 2. The rabbit show at the District Livestock Show is set for Saturday, February 6, 2010.
