Health Unit nurse Tammy Bailey shows David Moore and Jeremy Rowan how to properly hold and burp a baby.

The LSU AgCenter Extension Service recently held a 7-hour Super Sitter Training Course for interested children ages 11 to 16. Seven participants enjoyed and actively participated in presentations from various community resource personnel. The event was led by LSU AgCenter Extension Agent Ginger Boutwell.

During the morning session topics included: the basics of babysitting as a business, the development of children and activities for children of various ages. Tammy Bailey from the Franklin Parish Health Unit talked to students about caring for babies. Students were given hands-on experience in handling an infant and changing their diapers properly. Special instructions were given in safety precautions that should be taken when caring for an infant. They also learned about SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and Shaken Baby Syndrome and the precautions that should be

taken to prevent these tragedies.

Jean Lemos of the Franklin Parish Library talked about books for children and the importance of reading to children. She showed several easy activities to do with children that were fun and inexpensive. Afterwards, Boutwell and Stanley helped participants as they made several fun items to go in their Super Sitter’s Tool Kit.

After a short lunch break students learned what to do in various emergency situations. Nickie Martin and Reva Magee of 911 explained how the 911 Emergency System works and in what situations they should make an emergency call. Using the 911 simulator students were given the chance to practice making an emergency call.
