CHARACTER COUNTS!

Character Counts! is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian coalition of schools, communities and nonprofit organizations working to advance character education by teaching the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

In schools: The six pillars are being taught in the classroom by peers and older students. Teachers have been trained to reinforce the six pillars in the classroom. Schools adopt or select a pillar of the month, and school rules reflect six pillar language.

In businesses: The six pillars are being taught to employees using Workplace Ethics lessons. Language of the six pillars is being used by sales people and all others who deal with the public.

Parents: Parents are aware of the six pillars of character as a result of classroom handouts given to their children and use the language of the pillars at home to reinforce ideas taught in the classroom.

Character Critters

Character Critters was developed by the LSU AgCenter for preschool and kindergarten children. Character Critters uses a story and activity approach to teaching the six pillars of character.

Volunteers are trained to reach the six stories and do activities with children in child care centers, preschools and kindergartens in the parish and also at the parish library.
