4-H
Sixteen 4-H'ers participated in a science workshop on density and polymers. They learned how liquids with different densities layer on top of one another. They also experimented with polymers using ingredients such as corn starch and water.
Five 4-H'ers participated in the annual Black Farmers' Tour at Harper Armstrong's farm in Bastrop. LSU and SU AgCenter speakers expressed the importance of getting young people excited about agriculture. The tour included a trail ride through cotton, soybean and corn fields.
Three 4-H'ers attended the Purina Mills Show Ring Success Seminar in Alexandria, La. where they learned the ins and outs of showing livestock.
Three 4-H'ers attended a Small Animal Clinic in Delhi, La. where they participated in hands-on activities to learn about nutrition/housing, grooming and showmanship of goats.
Agriculture & Natural Resources
Fifteen small cattle producers attended "Pasture Walks" and learned new strategies for managing forage resources in dry conditions.
Nine producers are participating in the Master Cattleman Program.
Eight people attended a rice school held on Marsh Farms where they gained knowledge in entomology, weed control and general management tips.
Corn, soybean and cotton demonstration fields were monitored for the purpose of evaluating varieties within the parish. These demonstration fields were available to all producers to visit and gain knowledge of the different varieties.
Fifteen producers attended a workshop at Plantation Hall where they learned more about defoliation/burndown and variety selection.
Community Rural Development
Northeast Louisiana was chosen to participate in the USDA SET (Stronger Economics Together) program which is designed to encourage contiguous parishes to develop regional economic development plans.
Family & Consumer Sciences - EFNEP & FFNEWS
Twenty-four Preparing for Success parenting and financial management classes were conducted where 29 parents gained knowledge and understanding of effective parenting and money management practices.
Three hundred seventy-six clients receiving Foods for Seniors and commodities learned more ways to better use their issued foods through illustrated talks as fact sheets were distributed.
Nineteen food service participants increased their knowledge of food safety practices in an in-service training.
Two meetings were held at the housing authority in which 35 clients increased their skills and gained knowledge of healthy eating practices.
More than 900 clients gained knowledge and increased skills in healthy eating practices and physical fitness by way of home visits and group meetings.
