1st Quarter 2009

4-H Youth Development

More than 700 4-H’ers became more knowledgeable on living a healthy lifestyle and of gardening skills by learning how to choose a healthy diet and getting gardening tips.

30 youth attended Ag Adventures and became more knowledgeable about the nutritional and economical importance of Louisiana Ag products sweet potatoes, poultry, dairy products and cotton.

Six 4-H’ers attended the district nutritional cooking contest 4-H Food and Fitness Expo where they learned nutritious facts about nine different commodities.

More than 100 4-H’ers, leaders and parents attended 4-H Night with the New Orleans Hornets in which they had the opportunity to experience an event away from their home and to interact with others from around the state.

Two 4-H’ers attended Junior Leadership Conference where they increased their communication, leadership and team skills.

Agriculture & Natural Resources

52 producers learned how to apply restricted and general use pesticide in a safe and responsible manner and how to comply with the Worker Protection Standard Agricultural Pesticide use. Parish agents help new private applicators prepare for the private applicator certification exam.

Agent Glenn Dixon and a volunteer helped residents at a local nursing home plant a container garden.

Agent Dixon served as the superintendent of the Rabbit Show at the District Livestock Show in Delhi and Superintendent of the Swine Show at the SU Livestock show in Baton Rouge.

Approximately 700 4th graders attended the NE Louisiana Ag Expo and were taught the importance of agriculture in the State of Louisiana in particular cotton. They gained knowledge on the uses, production, ginning and classing of cotton.

Approximately 1,100 4th graders and teachers attended Ag Adventures where they learned the importance of cotton to north Louisiana. Topics discussed included production practices, uses, ginning and classing of cotton.

Corn variety trials, cotton variety trial, soybean variety trial, Dermacor demonstration and rice verification demonstration were planted so that all producers within the parish can visually evaluate varieties and practices within their parish.

The Asian Soybean Rust (ASR) Sentinel plot was planted. The purpose of this plot is to act as an early detector of ASR in the area.

Community Rural Development

The Louisiana Delta Initiative (LDI) is a newly formed regional network of community and economic development organizations working in collaboration to improve the economic conditions in a 12 parish, Louisiana delta region. The AgCenter is conducting community assessment updates to develop a concrete plan of action.

Six promising entrepreneurs learned how to make items available for sale on the Internet via an eBay workshop.

Agent Dixon conducted a tour and hosted visitors from resettlement communities in the southeast. Visitors toured the Henderson Project, the New Resettlement Community in East Carroll Parish and the Louisiana Cotton Museum. Local residents gained knowledge of the historical significance of their community.

Family & Consumer Sciences - EFNEP & FFNEWS

Through a puppet show, four FCS agents illustrated the pillars of character. 891 youth increased their knowledge of caring, responsibility, respect, citizenship, fairness and trustworthiness.

Developed and distributed nutrition fact sheet for the senior food distribution and commodity sites. 625 clients increased their knowledge in nutrition and how to better use a commodity.

Conducted 38 parenting classes in which 84 parents attended and participated. Parents gained knowledge and understanding of effective parenting and money management practices.

Agent conducted a workshop at the Lake Providence Community Living Center where 22 clients increased their knowledge of heart health. Mary Reed, a nutrition educator, conducted a food demonstration as other nutrition educators served the demonstrated healthy snack.

Conducted meetings and participated in a collaborative effort with Rhonda Posey of Partners in Prevention in which 50 youth increased their knowledge and gained skills in conducting radio interviews. Six youth conducted 30 and 60 second radio spots in which to decrease underage drug and alcohol use.
